How many cards does Josephine Solitaire use?

104 — two standard 52-card decks shuffled together.

Why are there eight foundation piles?

Because the game is played with two decks, each suit needs two foundations. Every foundation is filled from Ace to King in a single suit, so eight complete foundations hold all 104 cards.

Can I place a red card on a black card in the tableau?

No. Unlike Klondike, Josephine Solitaire builds down in the same suit. The 7 of hearts cannot go on the 8 of clubs, even though it is one rank lower.

How many times can I go through the stock?

Once. Josephine Solitaire has no redeal, which is what makes the single pass through the 64 stock cards so demanding.

Which cards can I move from a tableau pile?

The card at the bottom of the pile is always available. You can also move a group of cards when they form a run that descends by one and shares the same suit.

What can go into an empty tableau pile?

Any available card, or any correctly arranged same-suit sequence. There is no King-only restriction.

Is every deal winnable?

No. Josephine is a demanding two-deck game and some deals cannot be solved, especially with only one pass through the stock. Use Undo freely to explore a line before committing to it.

Does the game save my progress?

Yes. Your current deal, score, move count and timer are stored in your browser, so you can close the tab and pick the game back up later on the same device.
